A Q&A with Annie Mulady to find out how she decided Mulady Solutions was something she just had to get on with and do |
Annie, owner of Mulady Solutions, supports organisations in the identification of service needs, motivating employees and providing the skills to make a positive impact with their customers and increase sales. But it wasn't always that way. Annie Mulady worked in management, sales and service roles for 25 years before starting the business.
So we thought we'd find out a bit more about what started the whole thing off...
How long did you think about this business before you decided to act?
I was thinking about the idea for about a year or so before I finally decided to take the plunge. I'd been working as a business development manager for a training company and for one contract there were no trainers available.
So I thought, I'll go on a train the trainer course. And decided straight away, that was my destiny.
Where were you when you finally decided, it’s now or never, let’s do it’?
I was having a bit of a midlife crisis. It was around the time of my 40th birthday and thinking about what had been, I decided I want to be in more control of my work life balance. And that was it...
Was there anything that helped prompt your decision to go ahead?
My father ran his own business so I guess there is something in my blood.
What do you enjoy most about running the business?
Definitely the variety – no training group is ever the same, even within the same organisation. I have also taken on non-training related projects and currently doing B2B telephone research for a manufacturing company. What I do not know about 'bricks' as a result, I honestly believe is not worth knowing!
What is your biggest challenge?
Covid is obviously a challenge. As the situation evolved back in March, it very quickly became apparent face to face training would be dropped - and understandably that's what happened. The challenge now is to transfer the training expertise into content that can be provided via on-line courses and Zoom sessions. It's exciting but also a new challenge to ensure I continue to hit the mark for both the participants and the company's objectives.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve been asked to do by a client?
My husband often says I should write a book about some of the challenges I've had in training. Participants definitely keep me on my toes.
However, whilst it was not 'strange', probably the most interesting thing I've done was a project for an organisation that involved me travelling to China, Pakistan and Vietnam, all in the space of about a month.
It was absolutely fascinating and a pleasure to complete from both a personal and business perspective. And probably something that, in that context at least, I'll not get the chance to do again.
What about your business are you most proud of?
Still being here 13 years later, having survived various economic downturns and now a global pandemic. The ability to be flexible has been critical in the projects I take on and the training delivery is something I am very proud of.
Is there a bigger ambition of which Mulady Solutions is just the start?
Not really. I really love what I do so the ability to continue doing it, is my main ambition - and maintaining that original objective of keeping a sensible work/life balance while doing it.
In a couple of sentences, how would you describe your business to people who have not yet heard about it?
Sorry - I cheated on this one and asked a client!
"Mulady Solutions have helped both our companies with excellent courses which have been specifically tailored to our needs. Annie is totally professional and committed to understanding the underlying requirements of our demanding business and putting that into training.
As a result, attendees were able relate to the highly relevant course content immediately. We have had several courses the results of which have been outstanding and the investment has been repaid many times over."
