MINUTES OF BUSINESS MEETING HELD AT

THE GEORGE  & DRAGON HOTEL

MONDAY 21ST JUNE 2010 – 6PM

 

There were 30 members present.

 

1.         Welcome by Andy McCready – President  of the Chamber.

John Galloway General Manager of  the George & Dragon Hotel then introduced himself and his Deputy Manager and gave details of the facilities offered by the Hotel.

 

2.         Minutes of last meeting – signed as a true record

 

3.         Presentation by Tony Thornby – Living Streams

Mr. Thornby gave details of his company which assists with problems regarding web sites. For further details www.living-streams.co.uk

 

4.         Presentation by Paul Mansell – PM Graphics

5.         Scarecrow Trail –

The Vice President Annie Mulady informed the meeting of  the forthcoming Scarecrow Trail on 10th and 11th July. This involved many businesses taking part and entry forms will be available at participating businesses and on the Chamber web site. Free parking had been arranged for all Marlow car parks on Saturday 10th July.

 

6.         Planning  -

Mr. Deriaz gave an update of the Wycombe Development Framework 2010 which will involve a consultation process starting from 25 June until 23 July. As part of the update two public exhibitions will be held at the Wycombe Sports Centre and The Rye Centre to show proposals for  2 key sites – RAF Dawes Hill and Abbey Barn South

 

Wycombe District Council are also preparing the roll out of an extensive consultation process on the issue of relocating London Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers to a new community stadium. Booker Air Park is one potential site. There are complex issues to be considered not least traffic generation. If approved it would be a departure from the current Local Plan strategy and would therefore have to be ratified by a Government  Inspector.  The consultation process starts in September 2010 and Mr. Deriaz would keep the Chamber informed of developments.

           

With regard to public transport, a new coach park was being considered at Handy Cross, and Chiltern Railways are about to start works to provide a considerable increase of car parking at High Wycombe Railway Station interchange.

 

Mr.Deriaz also informed the meeting of the new Government changes to the Planning system with the dismantling of Regional Planning, the focus of housing being provided on brownfield sites to prevent  “garden grabbing” and flexibility on housing densities as part of the localism agenda.

 

Also discussed was The Portlands site and its designation as retail or residential and the possibility of Liston Road car park being rebuilt incorporating residential accommodation on top of the car park may well be issues of interest to the Chamber and the business community to make comments on.

 

 

7.         A.O.B.

Visit by MP – the Secretary requested a show of hands in favour of  a visit by Dominic Grieve the newly elected MP who would be willing to come and talk to the Chamber and answer questions but could only be available on a Thursday evening. Sufficient members were interested and the Secretary would set up a meeting for the future.  Details to be confirmed.

 

Marlow Junior Rowing Club  - The Secretary gave details of a letter she had received from Colin Picton – Junior Girls Coach - requesting contact from any business who would be interested in helping the club to purchase a suitable boat to enable them to enter crews of 8 at local and national levels.  Please ring Colin for further details. – Tel:  07786 195814.

 

Licences – Mr. Spittle informed the meeting that any company allowing their employees to view live coverage of the World Cup on their premises or playing recorded music, must have an appropriate licence. The fine for not obtaining a licence could  amount to  £3,000.

           

Maidenhead Chamber – Mike Miller the President of Maidenhead Chamber asked to address the meeting and said he would very much like to forge close relationships with Marlow Chamber as there were a lot of matters that jointly affected both areas.  This was considered a good thing and the Executive Committee would progress.

 

The Chequers Public House – Ms. Mulady was pleased to see that the Chequers was now being refurbished and would be opening at the end of July.

 

The meeting closed at 6.45pm with thanks to The George & Dragon for their hospitality.

MINUTES OF BUSINESS MEETING HELD AT

COMPLEAT ANGLER HOTEL

MONDAY 17TH MAY 2010 – 6PM

 

There were  25 members present.

 

1.         Welcome by Andy McCready – President  of the Chamber.

Gaius Wyncoll – General Manager of the Compleat Angler Hotel gave a short presentation of the facilities and menus available at the Hotel.

 

2.         Minutes of last meeting – signed as a true record

 

3.         Bright Tomorrows - Francis White – “Bright Tomorrows” gave a short presentation on the work carried out by Bright Tomorrows which is a registered charity working to make a real and lasting difference for children in places such as Zimbabwe, India and Mozambique and Haiti. 4.         Flower Beds – the Secretary informed the meeting that there were still some flower beds available for sponsorship. These are owned by the Marlow Chamber and it is important for the town that they are kept filled and attractive. She emphasised the benefit of sponsorship to businesses.  The beds available are:  2 x round beds outside Zizi’s restaurant - £200 each; 1 x bed outside Marlow Chemist - £390. and 1 x bed outside Dean St. car park - £460. all prices are plus VAT. 5.         Martins Matters

            Mr. Spittle included the following matters in his presentation:

 

Statutory sick pay - as from  6th April 2010 is £79.15 per week. Statutory  Maternity and Paternity pay has been increased to £124.88.  Personnel on statutory maternity/paternity leave are allowed to work for 10 “Keeping in touch days” but can be self employed during that time.

 

Fixed Term contract – possible solution when a new employee is needed, but it is uncertain if the additional work will continue.

 

Vehicle Insurance - Employees who use their own car for business must have suitable insurance on their vehicle. However an Employer can take out an Occasional Business Use Insurance Policy.

 

Air conditioning – Rules for inspection depend on the capacity of the installation. For example existing installations over 12kw (about 2,000 square feet) must be inspected by 4th January 2011.

 

VAT - paper returns and payments from 1st April 2010 must arrive in time for the cheque to be cleared before the due date for the return. From 1st April 2010 businesses with turnovers exceeding £100,000 p. a. must file returns online and pay electronically or by Giro slip at their own bank.

 

Personal Tax – a fixed penalty is expected to be implemented for 2010 Tax Returns not filed on time. This will no longer be mitigated if all tax due for the year has been paid on time.

 

Beneficial Loans – from 6th April 2010 the official rate of interest on beneficial loans has been reduced from 4.75% to 4%.

 

Child care vouchers schemes – tax exemption is to be withdrawn for new schemes after 5th April 2011.

            Wycombe Economic Summit  - Annie Mulady (Vice President) had attended  a very interesting Wycombe Economic Summit meeting. The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday 10th June 10.30 – 2.00pm.  She would be willing to book people in for this event if they wished to contact her.             Newsletter - Annie Mulady informed the meeting that the newsletter would not be appearing on the web site for a while but articles would be updated all the time. She welcomed articles from any member and also if they would like to be featured as “Business of the Month”

The meeting closed at 6.45pm followed by the kind hospitality of the Compleat Angler Hotel on the balcony overlooking the river.
